About Fr. John Parker
Fr John Parker began his tenure as priest-in-charge of Holy Ascension Orthodox Church in June 2003.
I was born in Camp Lejeune, NC, and raised, for the most part in Northern Virginia. My father is a retired career US Marine (Lt Col) and my mother a retired career Spanish Teacher. My only sibling, Scott, lives with his family in Boston, MA. He works for Duncan Donuts corporate!
I graduated the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, in the spring of 1993, with a major in Spanish and a minor in German. It was in the final days before graduation that I met and was engaged to Jeanette Hoh. We married one year later in Wren Chapel, on April 23, 1994. Jeanette is a nurse at MUSC. We have two sons, Zachary and Sebastian, both in high school, and a happily rescued Golden Retreiver, Remley.
Following college, I held a number of different jobs, as I sought out my true vocation.
For a summer, I sold timeshare on Hilton Head Island.
For a year, I was a regional manager and recruiter for a college-aged-franchised Summer House Painting business.
For three years, I taught Spanish at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
Concurrently, Jeanette and I volunteered with the Middle School youth group at our Episcopal Church. Then, I served full-time for a year in that capacity.
Following that year, we moved to Ambridge, PA, where I earned my MDiv at Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry.
I was then assigned Curate at Holy Cross Episcopal Church on Sullivan’s Island, SC, where I served for 16 months, having been ordained during that time.
My family was received into the Orthodox Church in July 2002 by the Very Rev. Fr John Breck at the very same parish where I now am more than blessed to serve.
At the direction of His Eminence, our (now departed and ever-memorable) Archbishop DMITRI, we packed up and moved to Crestwood, NY, to attend St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. Another best year of our lives. There I earned my MTh.
I was ultimately assigned as the first full-time pastor at Holy Ascension, unworthily taking up the mantle of Fr John Breck, my spiritual father.
I enjoy playing the guitar and toying around with the mandolin. For excercise, my passion is surfing my 9’4 Hobie noserider. My true passion, however, is sharing my faith and serving all those whom God sends my way!
